Dear Robin,
It’s no secret that successful people have mastered
the art of focus. Concentrating on what’s really
important is the key to strength in all human affairs,
to paraphrase Ralph Waldo Emerson. Sometimes
however, even when we have clear priorities and
we’re truly doing what we do on purpose, we lose our
focus and ability to concentrate. The reason for this
is that we have too much internal clutter. John C.
Maxwell identifies 4 common types of clutter that we
need to keep out of our lives as much as possible so
we can concentrate on what it is we do best.
1. Emotional Clutter:
We pay a high price for holding on to emotional
clutter – grudges, unforgiveness, nursing grievances
from long past. It saps our energy and strength and
keeps us from fulfilling our goals.
2. Administrative Clutter: Everyone needs a
system for dealing with multiple
projects, deadlines, and tasks. Creating simple
organizational systems to handle the stuff of
professional and personal life is critical to harnessing
the power of focus and concentration. Find a
system that works for you and stick to it!
3. Calendar Clutter: Learn to prioritize your
work and spend your best and
most productive hours on the tasks and projects that
will yield you the most return. It’s called the 80/20
or Pareto’s Principle (link to article) and it will free
you from the time bandits. Don’t devote hours of
your precious time to something that has no payoff
for you when you could use those same hours to
concentrate on your top priorities.
4. Trivia Clutter: Don’t allow insignificant
things and low
level “irritants” to distract you. Unnecessary phone
calls, emails, meetings, and interruptions are
examples of trivia that drain away your energy and
dissolve your concentration.
When you embrace living clutter-free you’ll renew
your focus and reduce your anxieties. You’ll
experience a fresh level of productivity and you’ll feel
connected to your passion and purpose – and that’s
worth concentrating on!
