Are you enjoying the holidays this year? Or are you missing the real meaning of the season because your life is disorganized? Can you show your family and friends how much you care about them by being organized? You bet! When you're organized, you'll have the time and energy to enjoy the holidays. When you're stressed you lose your joy - and so do those closest to you.

If you're reading this newsletter, is it possible you have far more "stuff" than you need, and perhaps more than you can handle? Many of the people on your gift list are in the same position you are - too much stuff and too many commitments. Yet, there are many people out there who don't even have the basics, never mind the luxury of too much. When you are making your gift list consider these ideas to simplify your holidays:

Give the Gift of Organization!

If your disorganization causes stress in your life (and maybe others as well!) give yourself the gift of organization. I recently organized a client's garage as a gift to her husband. He had purchased a new car and he was now able to park it into the garage. He was so happy with the results that they went on to organize their basement and closets. From there they went on to organizing their children's rooms and were able to reclaim enough space to set up a crafts and game room for the kids in a spare bedroom formerly filled with junk. The positive effect on their family as a whole was tremendous!

If you or a coworker are experiencing the messy desk syndrome at the office, or if the people in your office are often frustrated because they can't find what they need, an organizing gift may be the winning ticket.

Give to Others

How about giving something to others in need in the name of friends and family? There are so many organizations that can feed and clothe hundreds of the needy with the amount of money you can spend giving even small gifts.

Remember - December is your last chance to get a tax deduction for your donations. Now is the time to reclaim some space in your home or office and give your unused and unwanted items to people who really need them. The average person only takes 10% of what they can legally deduct for a charitable donation. "It's Deductible" software (also available as a paperback) can help you maximize your deductions and get you the most from your charitable donations.

Get the most out of your holidays and give your family and friends the greatest gift of all - a relaxed and peaceful you - this season.

Wishing you a life in order this season,

Robin

Clear Your Head And Get Control

Productivity expert David Allen (author of Ready for Anything and Getting Things Done) calls them "open loops" - unfinished business that prevents us from getting around to what's really important. More often than not, open loops clog our energy and impede our focus, making it difficult to decide what to do next. The result is missed opportunity.

Organizing makes a great gift! (Consider the popularity of the TV shows, Clean Sweep and Mission Organization). A four hour session is just $250.00 – great for getting started on those storage areas like the garage or basement!

Whether its major projects or boxes of ancient stuff you need to purge and organize, start the process of completion. If you're not sure where to begin - start anywhere! Begin with something obvious like the stack of papers on your desk or the unopened mail littering the dining table. You'll soon become clearer on what to do next - and what's even more important – you'll be clearing the decks to be more effective and responsive on every front. And with the holidays arriving, who doesn't need to be more responsive?

So purge your emails, clean out your "In" basket, or weed out the debris in your clothes closet. Learn to close the loops and have a peaceful, joyful holiday season.

Escape the Chaos this Holiday Season!

Capture the magic of the holidays and eliminate stress with these holiday tips:

Make a master list. Starting with the highest priority first, schedule a few tasks to be completed each day. Plan early for holiday parties and travel and schedule these dates as soon as possible. A holiday notebook or planner that includes gift lists, holiday events, decoration and party ideas, gift wrapping, food ideas and an address list for holiday cards keeps all this information handy and in one place.

Change your gift giving perspective. Write a comprehensive list that includes everyone you want to get a gift for, ideas on what to get them and approximate costs. This step alone will save hours of wasted time wondering what to buy. Set a deadline for completion of holiday shopping and set aside time during the week to accomplish this. Consider "disposable" gifts like food, gift certificates, tickets to events or movies or magazine subscriptions.

Shop catalog or online. For relatives and friends who live far away, or just as a time saver, catalogs and Internet shopping will greatly simplify the process.

Wrap gifts as you buy them. Designate a specific area for wrapping and place all supplies there. As you bring gifts in, wrap right away and store.

Simplify holiday card exchange. Send e-cards online to friends with Internet access. Review your card list from last year and update your "database". Try sending cards only to people you won't see during the holidays to cut your list. Get stamps at machines or at the grocery store and avoid the post office lines.

Simplify decorating. Choose a few dramatic decorations to showcase your home during the holidays. Invite friends over to help decorate the tree. Get the family to help put up the lights.

Keep entertaining easy. A catered party will greatly reduce the time involved in food preparation and shopping. Or have guests contribute a dish. Order groceries online - many stores deliver for a minimum charge.

10 Minute Clutter Control with Feng Shui

I love the idea of Feng Shui - the ancient Chinese art of placement for optimum flow of positive energy (called chi). These fun tips are from Skye Alexander’s book, 10 Minute Clutter Control: Easy Feng Shui Tips for Getting Organized. Transform your environment - and your life (it does work - I'm a believer!) and eliminate clutter in no time!

  • Use the one-a-day clutter clearing method. If clearing out clutter seems like an overwhelming task, take one step at a time. Just get rid of one thing you don't need each day - donate it, recycle it, or throw it away.

  • Clutter on the dining room table can produce tension or problems between family members. Don't let the table become a clutter catchall.

  • Don't store items under the bed. This can block the flow of chi and disrupt sleep. If you must utilize the space under the bed for storage, be sure to organize items neatly and as few as possible.

  •
  • Organize magazines and newspapers. Get rid of outdated periodicals. Holding on to old news can block new ideas from emerging. Recycle or donate for others to read.

  • Clear kitchen countertops of clutter. In Feng Shui, the kitchen is associated with prosperity. By keeping countertops neat and uncluttered, you reduce money related stress and confusion. From a practical point of view, clutter free countertops make work more efficient.
